On February 23, 2022, we received aboard the research vessel (RV) Mário Ruivo the visit of about 70 students from Valsassina school in Lisbon, member of the Blue School Programme, under the EEA Grants project “The Ocean of [my] Future”. The students were accompanied by the Pedagogical Director of Valsassina, teachers and the representative of the project’s coordination, Ana Carvalho from MARE STARTUP.

In addition to the guided tour to the NI Mário Ruivo with the support of the crew, the team of the Research Vessels and Observatories Group (NNIO) of IPMA made brief sessions on what are research vessels and why they are important for the study of the ocean and the creation of scientific knowledge. Reference was also made to the EMSO-PT project (European Multidisciplinary Seafloor and water column Observatory – Portugal) as an example of a project aiming to install underwater observatories in the Iberian Margin under the EMSO-ERIC European initiative.

The visit was organized by IPMA with the important support of Lisbon’s Naval Base.
