Ocean monitoring is accomplished through the installation of scientific equipment and sensors that allow to gather a set of biotic and abiotic parameters of the ocean floor, water column and ocean-atmosphere interface. IPMA’s fleet offers a support platform for maintaining and deploying observational infrastructures, namely:

European Multidisciplinary Seafloor and Water Column Observatory (Portugal).

EMSO-PT is a European Large Scale Research Infrastructure, consisting of multidisciplinary underwater observatories and other data processing support infrastructures. The goal of EMSO-PT is to generate continuous scientific data on marine environmental processes related to the interaction between the geosphere, biosphere and hydrosphere.

Data and Monitoring Infrastructure project

The main goal is to create an infrastructure for the acquisition, aggregation and dissemination of oceanographic data contributing to the improvement in the research and monitoring of the Atlantic Ocean, whilst supporting the sustainable management of marine resources. The project will take advantage of existing research platforms and infrastructures, such as the research vessel Mário Ruivo, and access to Portuguese research laboratories, some of which were developed in the scope of European initiatives, such as EMSO-PT.
